4 Easy Steps To Feeling More In Control

“Our anxiety does not come from thinking about the future, but from wanting to control it.” Kahlil Gibran

In my experience of working with hundreds of clients, much of their anxiety issues stem from feeling out of control. The more anxious they become, the more they try to control everything in their life. Feeling out of control can lead to avoidance and avoidance is what causes anxiety to worsen.

Here are a few examples:

Client 1: won’t let anyone drive them in a car because they have to be in the driving seat to feel in control

Client 2: gets up at 3am to clean the house because they feel unsupported by other family members and  if their house is a mess they feel anxious

Client 3: is overly protective of their children and won’t allow them to have fun and live their lives in case something awful happens to them

This behaviour seldom makes the person feel better. It doesn’t lead to feeling more in control and can often lead to arguments and resentment between them and those they love.

It is possible to break the chains of control.

Here Are 4 Steps To Feeling More In Control:

  1. Recognise that you are feeling out of control and commit to letting go of the anxiety that you are feeling
  2. Ask yourself whether you have any control over the things that are making you feel anxious
  3. Let go of anything you have no control over and instead choose to change your thinking/reaction/behaviour
  4. Talk to someone. More often than not by talking about your problems they feel less “problemy”

Make today the day you start taking back control by taking action. Follow the steps above and it WILL help.
