Do you use affirmations? I use them every day to remind myself to stay positive and to let negative thoughts go.

An affirmation is a short mantra that you say to yourself that puts you in a positive frame of mind. Even when negative thoughts start to invade our heads, we can switch to a better mindset by affirming a mantra. Does this sound a bit too good to be true? Well that’s understandable. You may be asking, how can this help? You might be thinking what’s the point of a positive affirmation when I’m feeling negative?

Here’s How Affirmations Work

When we smile we send a message to our brain that tells it be feel happy. Try it now. I guarantee it works. The same thing happens when you say a positive affirmation. We send a message internally telling our subconscious mind to think differently. This has the effect of changing the way we are feeling.

It’s easy to get caught up in negative thinking and can lead into a downward spiral of anxiety, worry and even panic. When we stop this process and start telling ourselves that we are strong, calm, resilient etc, the spiral is reversed and we start to feel better.

8 Steps To Positive Affirmations:

  1. Recognise you are in a pattern of negative thinking.
  2. Set the intention to stop this pattern.
  3. Decide your positive affirmations that will counteract the negative thoughts. For example, if you are feeling panicky, affirm that you are calm.
  4. Say your affirmations out loud. If possible say them to yourself in front of a mirror.
  5. Repeat them several times.
  6. Make sure they are in the present tense (I am calm instead of I will be calm).
  7. Breathe deeply between each affirmation.
  8. Set time aside daily to repeat your affirmations. Don’t wait for negative thinking to creep back in.

Some examples of affirmations that you can use:

  • I am calm
  • I am peaceful
  • I am happy
  • I am loved
  • I am resilient
  • I am strong
  • I am supported
  • I am healthy

You can also replace the word “am” with the word “feel”.

Have you tried saying affirmations? How do you feel they worked? Did they help? What affirmations do you use that aren’t on the list above?
