How To Stop Overthinking (3 Ways That Work)

I’ve spent the past 8 days confined to my spare bedroom. The first few days weren’t fun – high fever and feeling rubbish. If you’ve had Covid, you might have experienced this too.

Thankfully, I’m much better now so am putting my enforced confinement to good use and getting organised for my next wellbeing fair. (More on that at the bottom of the page.)

But let’s get straight into this week’s question:

“How do I stop the constant overthinking that goes on in my head?”

Here are my top 3 ways that really work:

1. GET CURIOUS

Get curious about what you’re overthinking about, noticing the thoughts that are making you anxious. Do this without judgement or self-punishment. Ask yourself, “Is this thought helpful or productive?”. If the answer is no, then ask yourself, “what would be a healthier, more helpful or productive thought?” and entertain that thought.

2. STOP AND TAKE A REALITY CHECK

When you are in the throwes of overthinking, it’s like a black hole of feeling like you’re never going to get out of it. Shift your perspective. Is this actually going to matter in ten years, 10 weeks or even in 10 minutes? Zoom out and see things from the bigger picture. That black hole is really just a black dot on a huge white piece of paper. Even if it feels like it’s taking over everything, it’s still tiny compared with your whole life.

3. GET PRESENT USING MINDFULNESS

Your anxiety level will go up when you are worrying about all the things in the future that might not even happen. Nothing bad is going on right at this moment but your thoughts spiral into overthinking about all the “what ifs’. When you notice this, take a second to remind yourself that aside from these fears for the future (or regrets from the past, “in this moment, I am OK”.

Practise these and see which one works best for you.

Do you have another strategy that works? If so, please share in my Facebook group. You might just help someone out who really needs to hear it.

I hope this helps you out and that you have an amazing day.

With blessings and gratitude Suz
